ADHD stimulant medication Shortage.

What Now?

We started to experience issues with Adderall supply in the summer of 2022, and it has continued to be an issue.

The shortage has now begun to affect most medications in this class. Since Vyvanse going generic the shortage seems to be getting worse.

Unfortunately, there has not been more done to remedy the shortage. Shortages of any other class of medication would likely not be tolerated. We don’t see national drawn-out shortages of cancer medications, or antihypertensives.

Shortages of other classes of medication would have more effort put in place to correct the situation.

Now that the shortage has been going on for over a year and a half, what can you do?

Talk to your provider about:

  • Dosage adjustments

  • medication changes

  • alternatives to stimulants

  • non-pharmacological management

  • be patient

  • talk about alternative pharmacy options

While stimulants are first-line treatment, often non-stimulants can be an effective alternative.

Ensure self-care to aid in symptoms:

  • Well balanced diet

  • omega 3 supplements

  • B complex

  • Magnesium

  • regular exercise

  • consider therapy
